My recent work explores my continued fascination with the combination of painting and collage. Animals, plants and bits and pieces of the natural world merge with human figures and faces inhabiting dream-like scenes. Ever-present in these pieces is the duality of familiarity and otherworldliness, interior and exterior space, domesticity and freedom, sky and earth, real and imagined.

In my latest body of work, each piece focuses on an individual character and narrative, rather than working in a series or progression. I explored what came naturally and allowed myself to break the rules, often working from decorative borders inward on centered compositions. The paint provides an environment for the iconic, collaged figures, each of whom have a strong presence and their own particular, mysterious circumstances.

The juxtaposition of paint and collage gives a sense of altered vision. This “collaged state of mind” – the dialogue between the real and the surreal – is what I look for in my own process and what I also hope the viewer experiences.
