Heather Hanley is a native of northern Louisiana now living in Albuquerque. She first started metal-smithing in 1994 in a Vermont barn while working on her graduate degree. After finishing a BA in Cultural Anthropology and an MA in International and Intercultural Management, she spent 8 years working internationally with refugees – primarily working with women in microfinance and income generation projects. She moved to New Mexico in 2005.
Her metal work has been fueled by years of living and working in other cultures (particularly in Nepal, India, West Africa, and the Caucasus, all of which have long traditions of metal-smithing and jewelry-making). She has had the great fortune to work with many artisans from diverse cultures whom have influenced her life and art today.
